Calligraphy India
A Sister Concern
of Raja Arts
In 1985 Harish Chander began a serious study of the art of Calligraphy. And in 1995 He established Calligraphy India a sister concern of Raja Arts. His love of beautiful letter forms and words has led to the study of many related fields such as Calligraphy, Handwriting Improvement, Speed Writing, Illumination, Guilding, paper Marbling and experiments in acrylic paste technique and Collage. He has also studied Silk –Screen and other printmaking techniques. All of these techniques have added great dimension to his work.
Calligraphy?
The word calligraphy literally means beautiful writing. The relevance of calligraphy lies in the human need for expression, through mark making, symbols, designing, drawing, painting and crafting.
Calligraphy encompasses or is influential to other relevant topics: book designing, manuscript of books, typeface designing, bookbinding, logo designing, sign making, beautiful handwriting, and calligraphy as artistic expression.
It is for these benefits that a learner derives from calligraphy — and the tests of time it has withstood — that calligraphy is still flourishing today.
We recognise the fact that handwriting commenced with the coming into being of the present civilisation, and it will continue to be used as long as the present civilised world exists. Therefore, calligraphy as an art will also remain in great demand — as it is today, and in future too.
Calligraphy covers a huge area of study. No one can start to learn everything at once. But you must make a start. This start, when followed with perseverance, will take you to your cherished goal — your goal to learn calligraphy to your satisfaction.
Those who have learnt this art, and will learn it, have always been gainers, not losers.

What Calligraphy is Not
"Ornamentally decorated letters."
No. Calligraphy isn't just about decorated text. It's about creating and arranging symbols beautifully. Unadorned calligraphy should look good just as it is — beauty of form, not decoration upon form.
"Beautiful handwriting."
Not exactly. The purpose of calligraphy is to evoke an artistic reaction — a profound meaning conveyed from artist to viewer. Handwriting simply aims to be read quickly and accurately.
"It is hand-drawn lettering."
No. Calligraphy and lettering remain distinct disciplines. Yes, there is significant overlap, but their fundamental objectives are not identical. The calligrapher's soul animates each mark.
"Just a very old-fashioned style of writing."
No. Simply imitating archaic alphabets does not fulfil the creative purpose of calligraphy. Learning historical scripts trains the hand and eye — but it is not the ultimate goal of a calligrapher.
"Oh, just any fancy font."
No. Calligraphy is neither a font nor a typeface. It is a skill encompassing touch, pressure, hand movement, unity, and that elusive quality we call beauty — the personal stamp of the calligrapher.

“Calligraphy is writing as an art form: it is the creation of meaningful marks of beauty such that they embody integrity, harmony, ancestry, rhythm, and soul.”
